Change Of Plan!

We reviewed our footage and agreed that there were too many events taking place in the beginning of our film. We realised that this would complicate the storyline of our film and create confusion amongst the viewers.
We decided that changes were definitely necessary.

Some shots were deleted in order to simplify the storyline.
We simplified the story by taking out aspects that were considered 'key features' of the beginning of our film when we presented our pitch. However, we changed our mind and began to focus on the actual filming of our film rather than trying to fit in too many things at once.

Work In Progress

After filming, we looked through our shots and realised that there were several shots that were not filmed properly.

For Example, several shots were filmed in a slanted angle because the tripod was not set up properly despite the fact that it was checked when we first set it up.

These shots were not filmed correctly as they were filmed in a slanted angle towards the right.

This shot was not filmed correctly as it was filmed in a slanted angle towards the left. Also, another error about this shot is that the character, 'Marcus's' head is cut out of the shot.

This shot was out of focus.

This over the shoulder shot was perfect, apart from the fact that it was slanted.

After looking through these shots, we list down the ones that had errors. We then filmed these shots again.

FILMING - SETTING UP THE CAMERA & RECORDING THE SHOTS

We began by setting up the camera and made sure that the lens were focused and that the camera was positioned correctly in order to film.

We then experimented with the angle and positioning of the came to ensure that our shot was filmed from the best perspective

After filming outside the classroom, we filmed inside the classroom. We explored different shots and angles by placing the camera in different parts of the classroom.

Our main actor Bernard, who plays the character of Marcus was then directed on how to act and speak his lines.

At this point, Bernard began acting his role.

Feedback from the Pitch

Our pitch was successful as we were able to present our ideas regarding our opening of our teen film clearly. We received some positive feedback from our audience for example :

  1. They were intrigued by our unique psychological thriller element and idea
  2. They liked our storyboard and the way we presented ( a video with music in the background )
  3.  We were also complimented on the way in which we presented our pitch (the use of Prezi)

Constructive Dream

Our initial idea was to leave our audience in a state of confusion after watching the beginning of our film. Our audience argued that our storyline would be too confusing to understand, therefore we had to adjust our storyline in order to make it clear to the audience. For example, we came to a conclusion that we should show that the unusual spooky events that occur to Marcus happens it a dream and then follows to reality.

Another change we advised to make was to ditch a location that was included in our teen film, this was the park. The audience stated that it has no relation to our storyline so we decided not to use an isolated park. Another reason why we  decided not to use a park is because we want to create a "no escape" effect where Marcus is locked in the school so it wouldn't make any sense for us to film in the park.

Chasing Shadows - institutional detail

The film company we have chosen to produce our film is Hammer film Production
we have chosen this for some particular reasons
  • hammer film productions is a British based production company they work specifically with British films and take an interest in horror films.
  • They are known for Gothic horrors and also since fictions and thrillers which is what we are looking for as our film is more of a thriller than it is horror but it is better to invest in a horror interested production company as we are more likely to be successful
  • our film is a small independent film. our budget would be small as it is a physiological thriller film which does not require many special effects.
  • they have already made 295 films and have made some very famous films like

these films had a reasonable budget and turned out to be
huge successes.
The Woman in Black
Dracula

As our distributors we have chosen Arrow Films

This is for the following reasons
  • They are also known for their investment in horror and thrillers.
  • they are a smaller distributing company so they may take an interest in our film
  • their resent distribution was The Bridge which will soon be on Blue ray
  • They release many of their films on blue ray and this is good as if the film is successful they can put it on shelves for the public to buy

Our film wont really have any merchandise as it is a low budget film and it will be hard for a huge company like toy companies or book stores to invest in us. Also it is quite uncommon for horror films to make toys or merchandises.

Our target Audience is obviously teenagers as it is what is in our coursework brief. However we could say that there is a age restriction making it a 15 film as it contains scenes of psychological horror and scenes that may be upsetting to a younger audience. The film would also appeal to a more older audience as it is about school so it is quite fascinating and nostalgic. Our film will appeal to teenagers as it will contain music that is relevant to the modern generation and it is based in school so the younger generation will be able to relate to is as well find it thrilling.

chasing shadows - Risk Assessment

there will be a few risks doing the opening like

  • staying back late to do the opening as our film is based in the night time so we may need parental consent
  • We will be using a fake knife as using a real one can be potentially dangerous and it is against the law to do so.
  • we will be filming in dark lighting so we will have to be careful not to hurt our self's
  • there will also be fast movements so we have to be careful with the equipment
  • we must handle the cameras with care also we are planning to take the cameras out of the building so we have to make sure that it doesn't get stolen and to ensure that we do not leave it un-attended at any times.

Chasing Shadows - Sound and Music

The music will be from Creative commons this is because they offer a wide range of copy right free music
we will most likely be using a track from their tense music collection in Sound Cloud as they offer music that is fit for our opening that is made for us we will also be using layers.

we will make our own sound effects which we will film and put into the opening. sounds will include

  • speech ( whispers of voices that will be shown)
  • music that will be tense
  • some modern music that will be playing through Marcus's headphones in the start of the clip
  • Dialogue coming from Marcus

Chasing Shadows - Animation

This is the animatic that we have produced we are still trying the figure out whether we want our titles to be at the start or at the end therefore we haven't added it yet however in the mean time the title list will go like this

distributed by Arrow Films
produced, writtern and screened by Saheba Yasmin, Bernard Mensah, Mohammed Madey and Tasnia Khanom

Costume designed by Tasnia Khanom
Music Produced by Sound Cloud

Chasing Shadows - props, costume and mise-in-scene

The props we will be using are:

this is what the instigator will wear

The school uniform. This is close to what Marcus will be wearing

There are not many props in the clip as it is only the first 2 minutes however the mise-en-scene is quite set. the film will be set in the school and the building will make it seem more thriller like as it is unlikely that someone would be locked in a school. the film is be quite dark and we will try to avoid any artificial lighting to show that it is set after school hours and to give it that horror aspect and to show that Marcus is a frightened character.

Our main character will be Marcus who will be played by Bernard Mensah and the second character will be played by either Mohamammed Madey or Tasnia Khanom.

The first character is Marcus Mensah. he is the young boy that is arrogant and dislikes school and who will be the victim of all the strange happenings and the second character is displayed as the 'unknown' character as through out the film the audience try to figure out who is trying to torture Marcus.

hair extensions for the 2nd character
This is one of the props that will be used and it will be fake as it is dangerous and against the law to bring weapons into school

Chasing Shadows - Planned Locations

The places we will do it in is in the college on the forth floor this is because it is the art department and it the most creative part of the college:

  • corridors
  • college
  • stair way
  • art department

this area is blocked of and therefore it gives it that danger and thrilling aspect.
This stair case is good as it has a hole in the wall which we can use to create suspense as we will have the main character to look in it and a surprise apperence.
long corridor to show the grudge scene
art which will make the scene more scary as it will be dark
this part is blocked of therefore it will show that the school is damaged.
more scary art
